Supporting Better Start Bradford with Design
Better Start Bradford is a community-focused programme dedicated to giving children the best possible start in life across Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton. Working directly with families from pregnancy through to age 3, they deliver more than 15 innovative early years projects designed to support development, wellbeing and long-term outcomes for children and parents.
We first began working with the team in 2020 on their ‘Little Minds Matter’ service as part of the wider Better Start Bradford programme, providing social media training and ongoing digital support. Since then, the relationship has developed into a wider creative partnership.
Their Brief
Following the success of our earlier work together, Better Start Bradford approached us to support a new requirement: the design of a suite of 14 Project Impact Reports.
The aim was to create a consistent and professional set of documents that could clearly communicate the legacy, outcomes and impact of each individual project, while being accessible and engaging for a wide range of audiences including funders, partners and the local community.
A key challenge was ensuring each report felt part of a unified family, whilst still allowing enough flexibility for individual project identity, storytelling, imagery and colour themes.
Our Approach
We started with a collaborative kick-off session to define the scope, expectations and key deliverables. From there, we developed a master design template that would act as the foundation for all 14 reports.
This approach allowed us to establish a strong, consistent visual structure while building in flexibility for project-specific content. The template was carefully designed to align with Better Start Bradford’s brand guidelines, tone of voice and existing visual identity.
Once approved, we rolled this out across the full suite of reports, working closely with the team at each stage to review layouts, refine details and ensure the content was accurately and effectively presented. Regular communication and iterative feedback were key to keeping the project on track and aligned with expectations.
What We Delivered
Each Project Impact Report was designed with usability and storytelling at its core and included:
- A clean, structured layout with clear content hierarchy
- A contents page with page numbers and clickable links for digital use
- Consistent formatting across all sections for easy reading and navigation
- Project-specific colour palettes, imagery and content to reflect individual initiatives
- Clearly numbered pages for simple referencing and sharing
The result was a cohesive collection of reports that are both practical and visually engaging for the reader.
Results
The final collection of 14 reports has become a powerful communication tool for Better Start Bradford, helping them clearly demonstrate impact, celebrate success stories, and strengthen engagement with stakeholders and funders.
Beyond just reporting, the documents now act as a storytelling platform, bringing each project to life in a way that is accessible, professional and meaningful. The consistency across the suite ensures brand cohesion, while the tailored design of each report ensures every project’s unique voice is still heard.
Overall, the project reflects a continued partnership built on trust, collaboration and a shared commitment to showcasing meaningful community impact in a clear and engaging way.
